As election day arrives here and will dominate the news for at least a day, but probably several weeks (please, WHEN will it ever end?!), here's a little levity for you.

Non-human candidates have appeared on ballots all around the world for this office or that, countless times over. And every now and again, some non-human candidates actually win the elections they've signed up for.

The first ever non-human to serve their government was a mule named Boston Curtis, who won unanimous election to a precinct seat in Milton, Washington all the way back in 1938.

A goat once was the mayor of Lajitas, Texas, and a dog named Bosco was elected mayor of Sunol, California all the way back in 1981. So there's precedent for four legged city leaders going way back in our country's history.

The first cat mayor named Stubbs was elected mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska in 1997 and served for nearly 20 years until his death in 2017.

There are currently - at least that we know of - three DOG mayors, currently serving their communities in the United States. And one of them is right here in Colorado!

A Great Pyrenees named Khaleesi is currently the mayor of Cormorant Township in Minnesota. Max III is currently the mayor of Idyllwild, California. He succeeded Max II, who succeeded... you guessed it... the original Max, who was elected back in 2012.

And right here at home... Parker the Snow Dog is the mayor of Georgetown, Colorado. He was elected in 2020, and also serves as the mascot for Loveland Ski Area.
