It's been a busy month for the Larimer County Department of Health as they've been out there consistently performing their duties to inspect retail food establishments for cleanliness and food safety issues.

As a reminder, restaurants in Larimer County are no longer rated or graded with feedback like "excellent," "good" or "fair." As of Jan. 1, 2020, they are simply allowed up to 49 points worth of violations to "pass." 50-109 points earn them another try at a "re-inspection," and anything over 110 earns them an immediate "closure."

In the case of a restaurant in Estes Park originally inspected on Oct 9, they earned a "re-inspection required" grade and were given a chance to correct the issues reported on that day's inspection. Unfortunately for the establishment, the inspectors chose to visit again on what turned out to be a not good day.

Bird and Jim, located at 915 Moraine Ave just southwest of Estes Park, along Highway 36 headed west, did not pass their first inspection mainly based on food handling and their processes for heating, cooling and holding certain food temps. Additionally they were dinged for normal, everyday infractions like improper hand washing procedures and how cleaning supplies are stored. Many of these type violations are able to be corrected on the spot.

Nevertheless, they did not pass their inspection on October 9. They earned a "re-inspection required," which took place pretty quickly on Oct 23. And the result? They were closed by the health department.

They determined that the restaurant had not corrected the issues from their prior inspection, stating:

This kitchen does not have active managerial control oversight of the kitchen. Corrective action was not conducted in a timely manner and pervasive temperature abuse was observed.

This Local Colorado Mexican Restaurant Is One Of The Best

After opening in 2008, Las Palmeras Mexican Restaurant has become one of the area's very best locally-owned places to get delicious, and authentic Mexican food. We found this place by accident years ago while driving hungry down Main Street in Longmont and have been regulars ever since.

The owner, the staff, the food, and the drinks are all top notch and that's what makes this one of Colorado's top choices for delicious Mexican food. It's also a perfect place to watch sports!
