Last summer, we ran into some insanely hot weather.

You might be asking: How hot exactly? Well, there were over 350 records broken across the state due to the heat.

Colorado’s July was especially brutal. Not only was it the hottest month on record for the state, but it was also the hottest month in recorded history

Last year, Climatologists hypothesized that the main contributing factors to the heat were the El Niño and climate change.

Despite the raging heat last year, there are town regions who easily took the cake as the hottest in the state; the Western Slope and the Eastern Plains.

Starting off on the Western Slope, Grand Junction has seen a huge increase in heat over the past few years.

In fact, the town’s heat has gotten so bad that last year that it broke 4 daily records for highest temperatures in Colorado. Each of these took place in July.

However, while Grand Junction certainly can reach some extreme temperatures, it has nothing on the Eastern Plains. More specifically, Lamar, Colorado.

Not only does Lamar average some of the highest temperatures in Colorado, but it’s also the record holder for the hottest day in Colorado’s history.

On July 20th, 2019, temperatures recorded near Lamar reached a staggering 115 degrees. Sure, Grand Junction experienced a ton of days over 100 degrees, but nothing to that extent.

Not to mention, the towns that are in a tie for second place at 114 degrees, Las Animas and Sedgwick, were also both on the Eastern Plains.

While we always seem to talk about extreme heat when it hits the Front Range, both the Western Slope and Eastern Plains can get absolutely brutal.
