A Colorado Zoo Welcomes a New Baby to the Family
It's a new year, and there is a new baby at a Colorado zoo. According to the press release, the baby sloth was born on December 18 at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The newborn Hoffmann's two-toed sloth appears to be strong and is already learning how to traverse its mommy's tummy.
The mother of the newborn sloth baby, Aysan, is a first-time mom at nine years old. Aysan was moved to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in June 2023 on a breeding recommendation by Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth Species Survival Plan. Bosco, a 32-year-old sloth, is the father. The arrival of the new sloth at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo means that Bosco is now a second-time father. His daughter, Bean, also lives at The Loft at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The days-old newborn has already started exploring foods with eating pieces of plantain, romaine lettuce, zucchini, and cucumber. While these foods may be great for the baby sloth, the main source of nutrition will still come from nursing. Mom and baby sloth will remain bonding behind the scenes in the Scutes Family Gallery.
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo says that the new baby and mother sloth will not be visible to guests just yet. However, when they are ready, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will share the exciting news.
