Berthoud Ultralight Glider Crash Under Investigation

A scary incident in Berthoud is currently under investigation by the sheriff's department.

In a report from the Larimer County Sheriff's Department, officials received a call at approximately 8:40 AM on Wednesday, August 13th regarding a plane crash.

This aircraft crashed in 3600 block of West County Road 2 near the border of Larimer and Boulder counties.

First responders who responded to the call were face to face with a deadly incident.

Ultralight Glider Details and Safety Info

Reports confirm that an ultralight glider had slammed into the ground and caught fire.

According to Epic Flight Academy, this type of aircraft is a "lightweight, small, and typically single-seat airplane designed for recreational flying."

Some of the models actually don't require a pilot's license to operate.

Firefighters Respond to Berthoud Glider Crash

Firefighters responding to the call were able to put out the fire. Unfortunately, the sole rider was found dead inside.

Officials confirmed the deceased was a man from Boulder, though his identity has not yet been released.

“Losing someone you care about is never easy, but a sudden loss like this is especially tough,” said LCSO Sgt. Justin Williamson, who leads the Berthoud squad.

“We’ll keep this man’s family and our wider aviation community in our thoughts during the difficult days to come.”

Glider Crash Causes Power Outages in Larimer County

This crash damaged nearby power lines and poles which caused 55 Poudre Valley REA members to lose power. Power has been restored to these households.

Investigators believe that the glider most likely hit the electrical lines before crashing into the road. There is no word on what exactly caused the crash.
