Grand Junction has a very nice senior recreation center just behind the Mesa County Central Library on Ouray Avenue. The city’s 2026 adopted budget (here) confirms tile in the building was recently replaced and installed for about $24,000.

As the city looks for ways to close a growing budget gap, it’s surprising to hear one suggestion is to close the Senior Center and fold operations into the new Community Rec Center. For the city’s seniors, however, the question is what the center provides that older residents may not find elsewhere.

The Grand Junction city budget remains under construction, and no moves are finalized yet. However, the 2027 budget proposes moving the Senior Center to Matchett Park. KJCT reports that Council member Scott Beilfuss questioned the proposal during the Oct. 5 workshop. The city sought quotes in February 2025 for new flooring covering about 3,100 square feet, raising a reasonable question about the timing of another major change.

Why Grand Junction Is Looking for Budget Savings

According to reports, City Manager Mike Bennett told council members that expenses are up since 2021, leaving the city with an approximately $6 million structural budget gap. Other proposed changes include cutting hours at the Lincoln Park Pool and fewer staffed hours at the Dos Rios Splash Pad.

Some feel moving the Senior Center could help reduce spending. Others feel they did not approve a 0.14% sales tax increase in April 2023 to have the Senior Center folded into the new Rec Center.

While the Community Rec Center features water slides and climbing walls, the Senior Center offers bingo, card games, exercise, and social connections. The cost is far less than memberships across town. Moving programs could offer new amenities, but transportation, affordability, and dedicated gathering space remain key questions.
