See Colorado’s Top 5 Most Destructive Tornados Since 1950
Since Colorado began keeping official records in 1950, our state has seen 2,295 tornadoes touch down inside our borders. These storms have cost us more than $290,632,440 in property damage over the last 73 years.
While several of these storms have caused a tremendous amount of damage, Coloradans have been pretty lucky to survive many of them. To this date, Colorado has only lost 5 of its residents to a tornado or violent storm.

Tornados are measured by the EF Scale. This is short for 'Escape Fast'. Just kidding. Find out more about the Enhanced Fujita Scale here. This system just helps define tornadoes by wind speed which helps predict damage and intensity.
- EF0: Winds 65 to 85 mph
- EF1: Winds 86 to 110 mph
- EF2: Winds 111 to 135 mph
- EF3: Winds 136-165 mph
- EF4: Winds 166 to 200 mph

Tornados in Colorado are typically EF0 to EF3.
