Colorado Kids Can Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day Too
Is it just me or does it seem like all the holidays are getting closer to each other? We barely even make it to one holiday before the next one zooms into store shelves.
We used to go to various St. Patty’s celebrations when we were younger. Now that we have kids, we pretty much just make sure everyone wears green, so they don’t get pinched.
Even though many adults partake in alcoholic beverages on March 17, there are many great ideas to get your little leprechauns involved with St. Patrick’s Day as well.
My girls are starting to get a little too old (oh, my heart) for some of them, but chances are, some of these activities would be fun for kids of all ages.
A scavenger hunt for gold coins is a great idea. Whether they are plastic coins or chocolate coins wrapped in gold, kids will like going in search of them. If the weather is nice, you can hide them outside, or you can pick a few rooms in your home and let the treasure hunt begin. Be sure to prepare a map with clues.
Making rainbow slime is something my girls still like to do. At any given time in our house, we have a least one container full of the stuff. Since rainbows, and the pot of gold at the end of it, are sometimes associated with Leprechauns, why not make up a batch and add it to the scavenger hunt for coins?
Several years ago, we tie-dyed some shirts and pillowcases. Of course, we did this activity outside so we wouldn’t get the paint all over the house. You could tie-dye some t-shirts in various shades of green, so the kids, and you, will have a green item to wear on the big day.
You can also incorporate greens into snacks and food for the day. Many people like to eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patty’s Day. My girls wouldn’t necessarily go for that, even though I would. How about making a homemade green shake? I think you could do it with vanilla ice cream, peppermint flavoring, and green food coloring. I’ve never personally made one, but it might be on the agenda this March. You could probably even just blend up a couple of scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream too. That might be easier.
You could also try to eat only green food for the day. I suspect this would be difficult to do, especially if you are a meat eater. I don’t know of anyone who would want green meat. That being said, you could have green apples, green grapes, kiwi, broccoli, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, and pickles, all of which are very popular at my house.
If you like pasta as much as we do, you could even try coloring your pasta noodles with a drop or two of green coloring. While it might not look appealing to an adult, I’m pretty sure the young ones will like it.
Just make sure you wear your green. I know many people who would pinch you if you don’t.
