Shoplifting in One Colorado City Could Soon Land You in Jail

Stealing is bad. You shouldn't do it. Soon, if you shoplift in one Colorado city, it could mean a three-day trip to jail.

The Aurora City Council held a meeting on Monday night on an ordinance to curb shoplifting in the city. The ordinance could create a separate theft category for retail theft according to KDVR.

Shoplifting in the City of Aurora, Colorado

The ordinance would mean a mandatory minimum sentence of three days in jail for people 18 and older caught stealing merchandise over the amount of $300. The proposal involving the theft of goods was brought by Aurora councilmember Danielle Jurinsky, Aurora Police Department division chief Cassidee Carlson, and Public Safety Group Manager from the City Attorney's Office, Pete Schulte.

The first reading of the theft ordinance passed 6 to 3 vote on Monday night and there will be a second reading of the ordinance soon.

Aurora has had its fair share of thefts. The city is one of the worst in the nation for auto thefts and one of only four cities in the state of Colorado that make up more than 50 percent of the auto thefts in 2022.
