Going for a stroll through any cemetery can be spooky enough, but Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs is especially eerie - even for most individuals who work there.

That's because the historic burial grounds in El Paso County are believed to be haunted. Evergreen Cemetery has even been featured on an episode of Biography Channel's "My Ghost Story," during which several people described out-of-the-ordinary experiences that took place at the creepy Colorado location.

More than 90,000 people are buried beneath the 220 acres of Evergreen Cemetery but locals aren't certain as to which of these souls are responsible for the continuous bouts of paranormal activity occurring on the premises.

Cemetery History

Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1871, shortly after Colorado Springs was founded. Another cemetery was needed, due to rising growth in the area. However, several of the plots inside the graveyard go back even further to the 1860s, predating the city altogether.

The cemetery was deeded to the City of Colorado Springs in 1875 by the town's founder, General William Jackson Palmer. Many notable Coloradans are buried here, including poet Helen Hunt Jackson and General Palmer himself.

In 1910, a small chapel was built to store caskets and host funeral services. Coffins were often kept in the basement of the chapel during the cold winters, especially when the ground was too frozen to dig into. A lifting device was used to lower the caskets and bring them back up. To this day, stains from the body fluids of those who passed away in the late 19th century can still be seen on the underground slabs in the chapel basement.

In 1993, Evergreen was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is only the second cemetery in the state of Colorado to receive such an honor.

Paranormal Activity

Stories involving the presence of spirits in the cemetery have been swirling around for years.

Most of the haunted happenings tend to take place inside the historic chapel. Not only are strange, unexplained noises often reported, but there have been quite a few spooky sightings as well. Dark figures have been seen inside the tiny building, usually near the casket-lifting device and by the staircase.

On two separate occasions, different women had very similar experiences when visiting the chapel's basement. Both females reportedly felt a cold blast of negativity go through them while going down the stairs. Once reaching the bottom floor, both of the women said they felt extremely uncomfortable.

According to cemetery staff, during multiple nighttime tours, guests have observed a flying figure hovering over a group of tombstones. The unknown cat-like entity is said to be approximately five feet in length and its body does not touch the ground.

Finally, a curious cemetery volunteer named Michael Coletta took it upon himself to bring in a KII meter to get a better sense of the spirits lingering on the property. Not surprisingly, abnormally high readings were recorded near the stairwell. Coletta said the experience made his skin crawl.

Coletta's unusual readings caught the attention of the Biography Channel. In 2011 a TV crew was brought to the cemetery for a deeper investigation. While filming for the episode "The Hand of Death" the spirits certainly came out to play - Hollywood honestly couldn't have directed it better. Coletta was in the chapel's basement reading for ghosts when a very heavy, wooden crypt door in the middle of the room opened on its own. No wind was present to have caused the door to open. Then, the door proceeded to close by itself too. The entire scenario was caught on camera, proving that no ropes, wind, or wires had caused the movement. Additionally, cemetery staff explained that the 100-year-old doors are tough to open and usually stick quite a bit. To this day, no one can explain how it happened, and the door has never moved on its own again.
