We all know that bears in Colorado pack on the pounds while awake in the summer months. However, I don't think many of us know how big black bears can get by eating nonstop.

The Colorado black bear will eat as much as it can so it can get as fat as it possibly can before the winter hibernation. This all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of calories will keep the bear alive during the months of hibernation.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northeast Region shared a video taken by Sue Daneillo showing a portly figure on a bear that is foraging for food.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife calls the bear chonky. We prefer the term "well-rounded" to describe the figure of the bear. Any species of animal would get fat fast with the diet of a black bear as they eat an average of 20,000 calories per day.

Colorado Black Bear Facts

Did you know that the Colorado black bear is part of the sloth family? According to National Geographic, black bears belong to the sleuth, sloth group. It starts to make sense as to why bears hibernate after learning that tidbit of information.

Black bears are not always black. The name black bear is a species, not a color. Black bears can be blonde, cinnamon-colored, or brown too. Chances are if you have seen a brown black bear, you would think it was a grizzly bear. However, black bears are much smaller than grizzly bears.

A black bear's nose is 100 times more sensitive than that of a human. Black bears can smell food from nearly five miles away. I would imagine that a black bear would steer clear of the nearest outhouse.
