May is National Golf Month. The word golf supposedly comes from the Dutch word kolf, meaning club. According to an online dictionary, besides being a code word for the letter G in radio communications, golf is described as “a game played on a large open-air course, in which a small hard ball is struck with a club into a series of small holes in the ground.” That sounds fun, doesn’t it? Yes, it is.

I’m not a great golfer – I haven’t played in a couple of years – but I do enjoy the game. And evidently lots of people like it too. According to the sportsmediawatch.com website, the final round of the 2022 PGA championship had 5.27 million television viewers. And according to the play today website golf has 390 million fans across the globe ranking it in the top 10 most popular sports in the world.

The Fact File website, the chances of an average golfer getting a hole-in-one are 12,000 to one. I feel like I take 12,000 shots in each game, so I’m sure my odds are even slimmer. A friend once told me that if we all played a great golf game, we’d all be on TV. It’s having two great shots, back-to-back, every once in a while, that keep us coming back for more.
