When you consider the actual mechanics that make it work, the internet is truly one of the most amazing things humans have ever created. Seemingly overnight, the world became connected in a way that was at one time inconceivable. Now, nearly 30 years since the average person got their hands on the 'net, we use it for everything, from banking to keeping in touch with everyone you've ever met, ever. Turns out The Cable Guy was historically accurate. Who knew?

For as amazing as the internet can be, and for every truly creative or innovative thing it spawns, it can't be denied that a lot of what finds an audience on the internet usually turns out to be incredibly stupid. Stupid internet trends don't usually stop at something as innocently foolish as the Harlem Shake, or Rickrolling. You also find a lot of internet challenges: people doing strange, outlandish, or straight-up dangerous things in the name of online viewership and notoriety. One of the hot challenges right now, presumably come up with by people who've never seen the movie Teen Wolf, is car-surfing. If you're not familiar, it is exactly what it sounds like: standing on top of a moving car. Yet another stupid thing teens stopped doing in the '80's is making a comeback in 2023.

Unfortunately, as with most things on the internet, people are taking this to ridiculous lengths. What used to be standing on top of your buddy's car while you drove around the neighborhood has now become standing on top of your own moving car with no driver, or trying this nonsense on the interstate. Needless to say, this has caused a lot of chaos, and people are starting to die.

It's already happened in Colorado. Just recently, a 16-year-old was killed while car-surfing on the highway in Douglas County. In the wake of this teen's death, the County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to the public about the dangers of car-surfing, though I'm not sure who didn't already understand that moving at high rates of speed with literally no protection was dangerous.

The best thing that you can do to keep your kids away from this foolish behavior is to make sure that they understand that internet fame is one of the most-fleeting types of fame that there is, and no amount of 'likes' is worth doing something that could end your life. Nobody is saying that you can't get in on an internet trend, just try to keep it relegated to the ones that won't cause bodily harm.
